Mother SierraMother Sierra's founders, Addy Vazquez and Eli Zloof, met in Vietnam during the course of their own personal journeys around the world. In their travels they had both noticed a common thread running through the fashions, modern and traditional, of all the people and places they had encountered: nature! Whether it was the Andean wildflowers, llamas, and condors depicted in the textile patters of the Quechua in Peru, the bright flash of a floral print contrasted with the otherwise austere, black ensembles in the streets of Paris, or the lotus flowers, bamboo stalks, and hummingbirds embellishing the batik sarongs and Qipao dresses of Malaysia, the colors, shapes and forms of the natural world were on full display wherever they went.

For Addy, this reminded her of the artwork and jewelry of the Wixáritari people she grew up seeing in and out cities across Mexico, where the Wixáritari people would travel Mexico in order to promote their art and their way of life. She recognized that the universal themes of nature were not something that belonged to a certain country, time period or one group of people, but had a place in every culture, and every style. She also saw that the colorful vegetation of the high desert of the Sierra Madre, the flora and fauna of the rich coastal regions and tropical waters of Mexico, embodied in the artisanship of the Wixáritari, could easily be at home in any one of the styles she had witnessed in her world travels. It didn't matter if they were complementing already outrageously colorful couture, adding subtle nuance to dark colors and formal attire, or a component of traditional, ceremonial dress, the beautiful designs of the Wixáritari were universally adaptable.

All of Mother Sierras pieces are genuinely and sustainably handmade by Wixárika & Otomí families in Mexico & Maya families in Guatemala.

The manufacturing process is a family affair, taking place at the leisure of our artisans and in the comfort of their own homes. There is not a single factory or assembly line anywhere in our chain of production and it shows in the quality and durability of our pieces.

Due to the unique character of our products, we order our merchandise in small, manageable shipments. So, when you make even a small order from Mother Sierra, you're not only elevating your style, but making a meaningful contribution to the indigenous families we work with.
That's because we know that feeling good is just as important as looking good!
