Meet Darina: Preserving Otomí Traditions in the Sierra of Puebla
From the mountainous Sierra of Puebla, in the heart of San Pablito, we are honored to introduce Darina, a talented Otomí artisan whose hands create powerful stories through handmade beaded jewelry.
Darina began her journey as an artisan at just seven years old, learning from her mother as they crafted simple beaded bracelets to support their family. Seventeen years later, she now designs intricate, colorful pieces—especially large earrings, her favorite to create. Each one is inspired by her love for nature, tradition, and the joy of motherhood.

“Being an artisan is a blessing,” Darina says. “It’s not just something I do—it’s part of who I am.”
The Beauty and Challenges of Mountain Life
Life in the Sierra offers Darina and her family peace, clean air, and freedom—a world far from the stress of cities. But it also comes with challenges: access to materials, medical services, schools, and markets is limited. Still, her dedication to preserving Indigenous culture through jewelry never fades.
Why Her Work Matters
Each piece Darina creates carries the soul of her culture. Her designs reflect Otomí symbolism, ancestral techniques, and a deep respect for nature. When you wear her jewelry, you’re not only adding beauty to your look—you’re supporting Indigenous communities, choosing ethical fashion, and helping keep Mexican artisan traditions alive.
At Mother Sierra, we are proud to collaborate with Darina and artisans like her, ensuring their voices and skills are seen, respected, and celebrated.
